European Cup Action Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games

Greetings to another night of thrilling European Cup football. 9 games are set for this evening, with three English teams in action. Chelsea meet Barça in the marquee fixture of the night, whilst The Magpies travel to the French side and Manchester City welcome Leverkusen.

Historical Context

The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semifinal of 2004, won by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal in the first half of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil lead at the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although Newcastle traveled to the French south coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home English top-flight win against City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole on the road victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Howe was overly keen to talk about the psychological aspect of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are 6th in the European table, with nine pts from a available 12 and automatic progression to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
