Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits Following Move Into Chicken.
A head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while broadening the company into poultry items has been removed after disagreements with its directors.
Leadership Change
Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.
Rennie, who was with the company for more than two decades, had aimed to shift Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards fried chicken, stating earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing food category in the globe.
Governance Friction
Sources suggest that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his focus and business vision, although Domino's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
New Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain launched its poultry brand – which Rennie called a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is testing it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in the coming year as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as an addition to its core pizza business.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the company chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and value creation in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing finding the suitable leader to oversee the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Market Difficulties
Recently, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it warned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the period before the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut revealed the shutting of 68 restaurants a recently, after the business behind its UK venues faced financial collapse.
Health Efforts
Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has introduced lower-calorie options, such as its light base line of pizzas below 400 calories as well as vegan and allergy-friendly pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she prefers not to assume the CEO position permanently.
Frampton stated: “We have a several ongoing expansion and efficiency programs that we will be dedicated to executing at speed.”
She said these comprised ongoing development on the company's procurement system and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
The pizza chain is also lacking a permanent CFO until March 16, when Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Snow is temporary CFO.
