British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
